My van COE is ending in Singapore — renew or change vehicle?
You must deal with the COE before it expires. If you do not, the vehicle has to be deregistered. That is LTA's rule, not ours.
A commercial van or lorry sits in Category C. At ten years you can renew the COE, or you can change vehicle. Both are valid. The better path depends on the vehicle, the PQP that month, and how long you will keep it.
Renew for 5 years
You pay half the PQP. A goods vehicle can take another 5-year term later, up to its 20-year lifespan. A car cannot.
Renew for 10 years
You pay the full PQP. The vehicle keeps full transferability and a future rebate window. Use this if you will keep it a long time.
Change vehicle
Deregister or trade in, then register a newer van or lorry with a fresh 10-year COE. Better when repairs plus PQP get close to a newer vehicle.

Start early — do not wait for the last week
Start about a month before the COE ends. That leaves time for payment, papers, and a quote if you change vehicle.
Insurers often need about 30 days to quote and put cover in place. Road tax cannot follow if insurance is late. Treat that 30 days as part of the COE job, not a later chore.
A goods vehicle may also need its inspection. Book that before the deadline, not after the van is stuck.

Prevailing Quota Premium (PQP)
There is no bidding for a renewal — you pay this set figure. A 10-year renewal costs the full PQP; 5 years costs half.

The renewal price (PQP) depends on when you renew. If you renew early, you pay the PQP for the month you renew in, and from about the 23rd of the month, that's next month's PQP. Any unused COE time is forfeited. If you renew late, you pay the PQP for the month your COE expired, plus a late renewal fee. Send Kimi your number plate and she will confirm which month you fall in. Can I renew my COE for 5 years or 10 years?
Both — but what happens afterwards depends on the vehicle. A GOODS VEHICLE (Cat C — vans, lorries and pickups) can keep renewing in 5-year terms, up to its 20-year statutory lifespan, so a 5-year renewal is not the end of the road. A CAR (Cat A or B) can take a 5-year renewal only once, and must be deregistered at the end of it. A 10-year renewal costs the full PQP and keeps full transferability and a future rebate window. Is it better to renew my COE or buy a new commercial vehicle?
It depends on the PQP versus the cost of a newer vehicle plus expected repairs. A rule of thumb: add the PQP to your likely repairs.
